48 hour event: The 48 hour race incorporates the Australian National championship. To be eligible for the 48 hours National championship, runners must be resident of Australia. Visiting runners are most welcome to compete and while they may win or place in the race, will not be eligible for the National championship. The 48 hours race and the 24 hours race, while conducted concurrently, remain separate events. Runners contesting the 48 hours event shall not be eligible for the 24 hours race. If runners in the 48 hours race withdraw at 24 hours, they shall be recorded as Did Not Finish (DNF) - also see rule below about excessive time off the track.

24 hour event: The 24 hour event is available as a qualifying event for the World 24 hour challenge. Male runners achieving more than 200 km and female runners achieving more than 180 km will be preferred for selection. For details of the IAU travel grants scheme, see Travel Grants. The race has the official accreditation of the IAU and is an IAU labeled event.

AURA Membership: These races are conducted under the auspices of AURA and are sanctioned by that body. AURA is a member of The Australian Athletics Federation and provides full public liability insurance coverage to the extent of $20 million. Competitors of all events at this carnival must be members of the Australian Ultra Runners Association Inc. These races are all conducted on an Athletics Australia certified course and the performances are eligible for inclusion in the AURA annual track ranking lists. Provision is made for membership application in the race entry form, at the low cost of $45.

AURA 100, 200 and 250 clubs: AURA recognises the achievements of those who run 100 miles, 200 km and 250 km within 24 hours by admitting them to the AURA 100, 200 and 250 clubs. Those admitted to those clubs are eligible to purchase an especially embroidered polo shirt for $40 plus postage. Those competitors who achieve these marks in the Gold Coast carnival will be awarded the appropriate polo shirt free of charge.

Timing and lap scorers: As in previous years, the race timing will be conducted using an electronic timing system. This system completely avoids human error. It will be not be necessary for runners to provide their own lap scorers. Detailed lap sheets will be forwarded to each of the competitors soon after the race. Final results are normally available within 15 minutes of race finish.

Direction of travel: The direction of travel will change every three hours.

Departure from the track: Runners may leave the track whenever they decide. However, when leaving the track, it will be necessary to leave/resume at the same point and that point will be adjacent to the kiosk. Please remember to complete that lap using the same direction of travel as you were travelling when you left the track.

Excessive time off the track: The objective of these races is to run the furthest possible distance in the time allotted. Runners in the 48 hours event who leave the track for more than 5 hours in any one break will be listed as DNF (did not finish). Runners in the 24 hour event who leave the track for more than 2 hours in any one break will be listed as DNF. Runners in the 12 and 6 hour events who leave the track for more than 30 minutes will be recorded a DNF.

Walkers: Walkers are welcome and may use the inside lanes. However, walking two or more abreast on the inside lanes thus unfairly impeding runners will not be permitted. Competitors who break this rule and who do not heed one and one only warning risk disqualification.

Aspiring Centurions: A Centurion is a person who walks 100 miles or more in 24 hours. The style of walking must conform to race-walking rules as adopted by the Australian Centurions.

Race packs: Will be available at the Pasta party or one hour before race start.

Shoe selection: Competitors in these events report that the track is hard, especially overnight in colder conditions. It is recommended that consideration be given to selecting shoes and/or socks with generous cushioning.

Medical: There is no official medical team in place, with runners finding it necessary to make their own arrangements for the treatment of blisters etc. However, many crew members present readily offer assistance and advice to those runners without an experienced crewperson. To be adequately prepared for the prevention and treatment of blisters and for proper energy, fluid and electrolyte replacement, it is suggested that competitors read medical observations by Dr Andy Lovy. Dr Lovy is an American resident, well known in Australia for his many appearances at the Cliff Young Colac 6 day race.

It will be easily digestible and packed with energy replacement carbohydrates plus adequate protein and aminos. There will be no onion, garlic, chilli or other spices which could cause stomach discomfort. This hot food will be made available every 6 hours for one person, the price being included in the entry fee. Additional meals will be available for crew etc. at the price of $10 per meal but must be ordered when entering the event. Meals will not be provided to crew and other support unless ordered in advance. GOOD FOOD AND ENERGY REPLACEMENT IS ESSENTIAL TO GOOD PERFORMANCE.
